History
Vaux and Mould designed Belvedere Castle as a folly, a picturesque structure meant to be admired from a distance and to give visitors a lookout over the park. It sits on Vista Rock, which the Conservancy describes as the park's second-highest natural point. It replaced an old reservoir bell tower that critics of the day considered an eyesore. The original plans called for a larger two-story structure, but financial problems limited the project.
In 1919 the U.S. Weather Bureau moved its Central Park observatory into the castle, and windows, doors and offices were added. The park's weather station had been in the Arsenal at Fifth Avenue and 64th Street since 1869. Automated instruments replaced the on-site laboratory in the early 1960s, and the building suffered vandalism in the 1970s. The Conservancy rebuilt the turret and pavilions in 1983 and reopened the castle as a visitor center. A comprehensive 15-month restoration finished in 2019, including a geothermal heating and cooling system. Weather instruments south of the building still record temperature, wind and rainfall.
