The current building is the fourth venue to use the Madison Square Garden name. It opened on February 11, 1968, and was built above Pennsylvania Station, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and 31st and 33rd Streets.
Between 2011 and 2013 the arena went through a $1 billion renovation in phases. The lower bowl was finished in 2011 and the upper bowl in 2012. The Madison Suites and Madison Club were completed for the 2012-13 seasons, and the Chase Square lobby, the Chase Bridges and a new scoreboard were completed for the 2013-14 seasons.
The Garden has hosted a wide range of events. They include the 2004 Republican National Convention.
Event schedules change, so check the Garden's official website. The arena sits above Pennsylvania Station. Hudson Yards and the Vessel are a short distance west, and the Empire State Building is a few blocks east. To see Midtown by pedicab, see our tours.
