History

One Vanderbilt was developed by SL Green Realty and designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox. Its completion was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it formally opened on September 14, 2020. At completion it was the second-tallest office building in New York City, after One World Trade Center, and it remains among the city's tallest buildings.

The SUMMIT observation experience opened on October 21, 2021. Its interiors span floors 91 to 93, and the observation area is about 1,020 feet above the ground. It includes "Air," an infinity room designed by Kenzo Digital, and "Levitation," a set of enclosed glass balconies that project from the facade.

At street level, the building's 4,000-square-foot transit hall links to the subway and railroad stations. The building also includes a waiting room for Grand Central Madison, the Long Island Rail Road terminal built beneath Grand Central, which opened in 2023. A public plaza of about 14,000 square feet along Vanderbilt Avenue was designed by PWP Landscape Architecture.
